Flathead Valley Community College’s 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Margaret Lekander during the Ambassadors and Alumni of Flathead Valley Community College spring luncheon on March 17. Suzy Williams, Ambassadors and Alumni of FVCC chair, presented Lekander with the second annual award, introducing her as “downtown Kalispell’s biggest supporter.”
The award honors graduates of FVCC for their contributions and service to their communities and/or achievements in their careers.
Lekander purchased Wheaton’s in downtown Kalispell in 1976 and has successfully owned and operated the business for over 35 years. She served on the Business Administration/Small Business Management Occupational Advisory Committee for the college in 2005-2006 and is an active member of the Ambassadors and Alumni of FVCC organization. She also serves as a spokesperson for FVCC in its advertising and promotional campaigns.
Lekander was named Business Woman of the Year in 1997 by the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, and in 2009, the Flathead Beacon named her one of its Business People of the Year. In addition to her career achievements, she has served on the boards for multiple organizations including Kalispell Downtown Association, Kalispell Business Improvement District, the City of Kalispell’s Brownfield Steering Committee, Center for Restorative Youth Justice and the Job Service Employer Council.
“The recipient is simply an outstanding representative of FVCC and its alumni organization in every way,” Williams said. “Her continued support of Flathead Valley Community College is most impressive.”
